Last January, I composed a melody for my friend, Skillo J, a piece that originated from depths of grief and memory. This composition, initially written in the aftermath of my father's passing, and read during his funerals when we were making the coffin entering the vault, began its life as a sonnet I had the honour of reciting at his funeral. Over time, and during a reflective bus journey through the heart of London, it evolved, blooming into a song. The working title of this sonnet, The Lost Realm of Lazarus, hinted at themes of revival and enduring legacies.
Indeed, there's a peculiar solace found in the routine journeys back home after a day's work, particularly when the commute stretches close to an hour. Such moments of forced pause and idle transit often become unexpected cradles for creativity.
As for Skillo J, his plans to lay down this track in the studio are afoot, an endeavour that fills me with a blend of anticipation and nostalgia. And so, without further ado, I present the lyrics, a bridge between past and present, grief and art.
The Lost Realm of Lazarus
The door was closed and the silence felt upon me,
Shadows stretched across the floor where your light used to dance.
I couldn’t believe it, I couldn’t imagine this was true and there,
The world around me faded, lost in a haze of disbelief and suspense.
You’ve been my wings carrying me when I stalled here,
Your love, your voice, your melody still drawing me near.
Among these stones, I wander, lost, yet you're close to me,
Whispers of the past, in every carved memory.
Though you've crossed to shores my eyes can't see,
Your essence lingers, a guiding light to me.
With every step on this hallowed ground, your presence feels so clear,
Beneath the moon's soft glow, I sense you near.
Our connection transcends the bounds of mortality,
Here amidst the shadows, you're forever a part of me.
Now that my anger is still set to devour me from the inside,
I find solace in your memories, where my true feelings reside.
I want to find a way to deal with it, to deal with that new cold reality,
Seeking warmth in the echo of your laughs within my soul’s fragility.
But the fire still burns bright and loud, the thunder behind this window
Echoing our strength and flaws in the depth of a shadow
Among these stones, I wander, lost, yet you're close to me,
Whispers of the past, in every carved memory.
Though you've crossed to shores my eyes can't see,
Your essence lingers, a guiding light to me.
With every step on this hallowed ground, your presence feels so clear,
Beneath the moon's soft glow, I sense you near.
Our connection transcends the bounds of mortality,
Here amidst the shadows, you're forever a part of me.
How far are we gonna be, gonna go there like this?
Can we navigate the shadows, find our way in the abyss?
Will the echoes of our love, in the silence persist?
Do the memories we hold, have the strength to resist?
My heart, now that you’re gone and that I hold that letter,
Would tomorrow be perhaps, for the grace of god, be any better?
I tried to save you from your inner daemons but it seems you were gone
Leaving me in a deafening silence to deal with that dawn alone.
I wanted to make that sinister world a better place for you and me,
But now here I stand, facing a future I can barely see.
May your final takeoff be peaceful and set you free,
Beyond the stars where you’ve always meant to be.
Our connection transcends the bounds of mortality,
Here amidst the shadows, you're forever a part of me
